ATTF guerrillas kill 9 in west Tripura

All Tripura Tiger Force guerrillas on Thursday gunned down nine people, including eight security men, and shot at two others at Kantakobra in west Tripura, police said.

Armed ATTF ultras ambushed the security men escorting Communist Party of India-Marxist MLA Pranab Debbarma and opposition leader of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council Radha Charan Debbarma, killing seven people, including six Tripura State Rifles jawans, on the spot.

The tribal leaders, on their way to Patni to address a public meeting, escaped unhurt, while five others were injured in the attack.

The rebels might have taken away some arms and ammunition of the slain jawans, police said.

Additional security forces, led by senior police officials, rushed to the spot and launched a combing operation.

Friday's attack was the fourth on security forces and the second biggest by militants this year. Guerrillas of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura had shot dead 13 people, including eleven Central Reserve Police Force jawans, at Bampur in south Tripura on March 3.
