IT gives clean chit to Advani, Sinha

The Union government on Thursday submitted before the Delhi High Court that contrary to media reports, neither Union Home Minister L K Advani nor Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha have been found to have received monies in the Jain hawala case.

The Director General of Income Tax moved an application in the court stating that the reports concerning an alleged income tax probe were incorrect.

Mentioning the application, Solicitor General Harish Salve stated that these reports wrongly stated that the probe report showed that the income of the two ministers was disproportionate to their known sources of income.

Salve said the department's appraisal report, on the contrary, stated that there was no evidence to support the allegations of receipt of monies by Advani and Sinha in the Jain hawala case.

The Solicitor General further submitted that the appraisal report being confidential in nature, he was not in a position to disclose the contents regarding the persons accused, but as a result of wrong reports in the media, he was compelled to make the position clear regarding Advani and Sinha. The court fixed hearing of the application for Monday.

The gist of the probe reports, having been handed over to the court in a sealed cover by the Solicitor General, there was no authentic information as to what was contained in it.
