Shoot orders for 5th phase of
panchayat polls in Bihar

Security forces were put on high alert and shoot orders given as the stage was set to hold the fifth and penultimate phase of polls to 1075 panchayats spread over 70 blocks in Bihar on Friday amid apprehensions of violence.

Official sources said shoot orders issued earlier by the administration against booth grabbers would continue to be in force during polling.

State Director General of Police R R Prasad said all the concerned police stations had been alerted. Intense patrolling would be introduced and buildings where polling would take place would be manned by armed police personnel to ensure free, fair and peaceful polls.

Entry points into the state had been sealed to prevent entry of anti-socials through the border with Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand or West Bengal.

Police seized several firearms, including regular and country-made weapons, huge quantity of explosives, and unearthed illegal weapon-manufacturing factories during raids conducted as part of preventive measures to ensure trouble-free polls, Prasad said.

Over 60 people, including six candidates for the post of panchayat president, had been killed in the widespread violence that erupted during the first four phases of the polls on April 11, 15, 19, and 23.

The sixth and final phase is slated for April 30. Panchayat elections in Bihar are being held after over 22 years.

UNI adds:
Four criminals were arrested in Nalanda district on Thursday.

State Director General of Police R.R. Prasad said in Patna that three rifles, a pistol and a few cartridges were recovered from them.

The outlaws were collecting firearms to create trouble during the fifth phase of the panchayat elections, he added.
