Jaya to move SC for sanction to contest poll

The Tamil Nadu government will file a caveat in the Supreme Court in connection with the case relating to All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary J Jayalalitha's petition seeking to have her conviction in the TANSI land deal cases suspended, Public Prosecutor R Shanmugasundaram said.

Earlier, counsel for Jayalalitha told Justice Malai Subramanian of the Madras high court that no clarification was necessary in the judgment delivered by him on Wednesday.

The judge, annoyed, told counsel not to play with the court since a clarification had been sought on Wednesday and a large number of people had already gathered to hear it.

With Jayalalitha not seeking any clarification on the judgment dismissing her plea to suspend her conviction, a ruling that had evoked different interpretations, the expectation in Madras is that she will move the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Election Commission to permit her to contest the poll.
