Behram Contractor dies at 70

A Correspondent in Bombay

Behram Contractor, founder-editor of The Afternoon Despatch & Courier, better known to his readers as 'Busybee', died at about 0100 IST on Monday in Bombay.

Contractor, 70, was on his way home when he complained of chest pain. He was rushed to Bombay Hospital in an ambulance, but died before admission. The cause of death was cited as collapse of the lungs.

Contractor is survived by his wife Farzana.

Contractor's daily column titled 'Round and About' was a staple of Bombay eveningers from the now-defunct The Evening News of India through Mid-Day to The Afternoon. The column remained immensely popular over more than a quarter century despite moving through three afternoon papers.

Contractor's remains will be consigned to the flames at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium in south Bombay at 1700 IST on Monday.
