'Why doesn't someone file a case against the chief ministers concerned?'
Date:
Wed, 27 Sep 2000, 13:50:26EST -0400 This is not journalism. The report is biased and distorts the truth just so as to get the readers to react emotionally. A cheap tactic usually followed by aimless politicians.

Wed, 27 Sep 2000, 13:10:54EST -0500 "That he has tremendous sympathy among the Tamils is not a secret..." the report says. It is difficult to believe that anyone living in Chennai or Tiruchi or Madurai feels anything else other than fear when it comes to Veerappan. If anyone has sympathy for him, it is only those who benefit from the so-called protection he provides them with. Regardless, such generalisations do not leave a pleasant taste. It makes it appear is as if Tamils asked Veerappan to do something about the Cauvery issue! It would be better if such references were omitted from an otherwise excellent series. Vishnu

Wed, 27 Sep 2000, 13:46:12EST -0400 I have a feeling that Veerappan's demands will be met by our politicians. God save India if such a thing was to happen! Suresh

Tue, 26 Sep 2000, 13:38:45EST -0400 I don't think Veerappan deserves such elaborate publicity. The politicians who support him silently should be exposed. I think the media as also the politicians and the police forces in the country are to blame for the sad state of affairs we are faced with. Gautham

Tue, 26 Sep 2000, 10:57:47EST -0400 If the chief ministers concerned fulfil Veerappan's demands, they are no less a criminal than he is. Why doesn't someone file a case against the chief ministers for protecting/encouraging the most wanted man in India? By conceding to his demands, what else are the CMs trying to do? If India wishes to deter kidnappers from committing such a crime, all our government needs to do is to adopt the policy of not rewarding them. Nallappa Raju

Tue, 26 Sep 2000, 15:30:34EST +0100 Our politicians and administration should be ashamed of not being able to nab this killer! If India is not able to shackle this brute animal (Veerappan), how can we boast that India is no longer a soft state? Birudu S

Tue, 26 Sep 2000, 09:26:23EST Ramesh Menon's articles should be published in newspapers too so that they can be accessed by a larger number of people. The information should be conveyed to every Indian living in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu if we are to ensure a better tomorrow. Ekambar

Tue, 26 Sep 2000, 10:48:09EST +0530 It is a shame not only for the government but for us citizens too that we have let one man terrorise us and continue to elude capture for so long. What stops the army from shelling Veerappan's hideout from helicopters? Would this not be a far simpler method of eliminating this criminal? Is it really necessary to capture a hard core criminal, try him in a court of law and then prosecute him? Had something like this happened in the USA, the matter would have been resolved long ago. I am also ashamed of the fact that the nation spends millions of rupees in developing missiles to protect the country from outside attack , a fact which is fully justified and essential, but we are unable to fortify ourselves and save our people from the enemy within. As a citizen of India, I demand that the government wake up and take action! They cannot call themselves a government if they do not know how to govern. Richa Shah
