5 of family gunned down in J&K

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Five members of a family were gunned down at Gurssai Mendhar village, in the border district of Poonch in Jammu region on Friday night.

Two injured persons have been admitted to hospital.

Police said militants forced entry into the house of Gulzar Hussain, a forest guard, and sprayed bullets from automatic weapons. Five family members of the guard, including wife Ashrafa, and four children, including two daughters, died on the spot. Two children seriously wounded were take to hospital, where their condition is stated to be critical.

Sources said Hussain was not present when the militants struck.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Security reinforcements were sent to the area and a massive search operation has been mounted.
