Top militant killed in J&K

Lone, a Harkat-Ul-Mujahideen leader also known as Puppa Lone, was the main accused in a string of rocket attacks on the Jammu and Kashmir civil secretariat, Inspector General of Police A K Bhan said.

The fierce gun battle at Barthana in Parimpora area claimed the lives of four civilians and two policemen and left eight wounded, six of them policemen, Bhan said. He said the killing of Lone by the personnel of the Special Operations Group was a major success for the police and a severe jolt to militancy in the state.

Lone, in close association with slain militant Mana baba, was responsible for a number of major militant attacks in Srinagar, including the rocket attacks on the civil secretariat.

A resident of Batmaloo locality in Srinagar, Lone was with the Harkat since 1998, the IGP said. Earlier, he had been with the Hizbul Mujahideen, he informed.

Elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir, 12 militants were among 14 people killed in separate incidents while five ultras were apprehended and two laid down arms since Tuesday evening.
