Two security men killed in gun-battle in Srinagar

In a fierce gun battle early on Wednesday in the main fruit market at Parimpora in Srinagar, seven persons, including two security men, were killed and seven wounded.

Police members of the Special Operations Group and the Central Reserve Police Force jointly raided the fruit market early in the morning and came under heavy fire from militants, resulting in the on-the-spot death of an SOG head constable identified as Javed Iqbal and a CRPF jawan.

Seven SOG members who were critically wounded have been shifted to hospital.

The cops then retaliated and opened fire, resulting in serious injuries to four civilians, of whom one died on the spot while three others succumbed in hospital.

Reinforcements have been rushed to the area which has been sealed. Later, troops shelled the house from where the militants were firing. One militant died in the gun battle, when reports last came in.

Security forces are combing the area, and no civilian movement is being allowed. This is the deadliest gun-battle in Srinagar in recent months. Senior police officials are already on the spot, and the bodies of the civilians have been handed over to relatives. The police have described Showkat Ahmad Lone, who was killed in the gun battle, as a top militant.
