'There is a strong bias against Muslims in India'
Date:
Sat, 16 Sep 2000, 12:48:35EST I wish you would also feature articles on the Allahabad, Kanpur, Benaras, Amritsar and Patiala universities where worse things are happening. Shahid Hashmi
Date:
Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 20:30:1EST -0700 That was an unbiased report. As an alumnus of the university, it pains me to learn of what is going on there now. The Parivar is hell bent on giving the university a bad reputation and the AMU authorities for their part are unable to control a few of the ex-students, some of whom may have anti-Indian inclinations. Indian Muslims have to be taken into confidence if such incidents are to be avoided and they have to be merged with the mainstream Indian population and given responsibilities. They are sure to come out with flying colors. Asim Haque

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 15:44:04EST -0500 I believe that there can be no smoke without fire. There are certain anti-national elements and ISI sympathisers. They may be few in number but they can make a big difference. Rajendra B

Fri, 15 Sep, 2000 08:36:32EST -0700 The article was interesting. How come the UP police has become so efficient? There seems to be some sinister game-plan against Muslim institutions in general and the AMU in particular. One should take note of the RSS agenda of how to harass minorities by implicating them in false cases. Taking this into consideration and the fact that assembly elections are going to be held next year in UP, one can judge the authenticity of the police version. Shazi Hashmi

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 08:21:21EST -0700 There is a strong bias against Muslims in India even though 90 per cent of Muslims are blameless. Is this fair? Mohammad Israr Khan

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 14:45:34EST Josy Joseph's story on the AMU was a very impartial analysis of the sorry treatment meted out to one of India's premier educational institutions. It is sad that communal elements have not even left alone educational institutions. What is more depressing is the branding of Muslims and Muslim institutions as anti-national. If even after 50 years of independence, Muslims in India have to prove their nationalistic credentials, then the less said about the state of affairs in the country the better. Rumman Ahmed

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 20:35:48EST +0530 That was an honest report. Muslims are capable of facing all sort of controversies created by non-believers. We will reply to them in their own language. Mohd. Tajamul Taher

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 10:41:49EST -0400 It seems as if there is a concerted effort to isolate the Muslims of India and some silly jingoists are falling prey to these designs. Efforts should be made to make Muslims feel at ease and to curb detrimental activities. Ganesh

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 10:37:44EST The report is biased in favour of the minority community and tries to gloss over serious national security concerns. That the ISI has been gaining ground in India and that it has been thriving on such elements as have been discovered by the police in AMU has been established beyond doubt. It is ridiculous to say that such elements operate in AMU without anyone's knowledge. The student community in general and the Muslim community in particular remain so close to one another that it is hard to believe that these anti-national elements would succeed in committing heinous crimes without the active assistance/connivance of their close associates. Eshwardas

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 07:35:05EST -0700 I am very perturbed by the allegations made by the article. I do not understand one thing about the students (and Muslims in general in India). What is the harm in proving your loyalty to the country you are born in, live in, eat in and in all probability die in too? Is it such a shame to do so? This attitude of the Muslims of wallowing in self-pity is ridiculous. I would say that this attitude is even anti-national. What scares me is the fact that these are young students who are harbouring such thoughts. Are we heading for a period of Muslim extremism again? I hope to god India survives another 50 years! Derrick

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 14:25:49EST -0000 Till last year I too was a student in the US. I know that many AMU Muslim students support Pakistan (as I read in the media). They are working for the ISI for money. The police should concentrate on such activities and the government should allow the police to shoot such people who they find are engaging in criminal activities. Suryakant

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 09:20:54EST -0500 I support my fellow Muslim students who are caught in this horrid mess. I don't have a first hand view of things, but I can say one thing for certain -- outsiders (ie people of Indian origin) are involved in this tangle. In the name of democratic freedom, we Indians tend to kill the spirit of discipline. Outside elements must be removed from all campuses in the nation. If these elements are not flushed out immediately, the consequences won't be good. Namit Prasad

Fri, 15 Sep 2000, 09:54:04EST -0400 The author seems to be completely biased because he too belongs to a minority community. Raghu Srivatsa
