BSF deputy commandant, wife injured in militant attack

A deputy commandant of the Border Security Force, his wife and three jawans were injured in an attack by militants while nine people, including seven militants, were killed and 14 injured in Jammu and Kashmir since Saturday evening.

An improvised explosive device fitted on a bicycle was detonated by militants while BSF Deputy Commandant Harpreet Singh and his wife were returning to his official residence in Srinagar on Sunday from Soura, official sources said.

The blast took place at Tibetan colony in Idgah on Soura-Nawakadal road on Sunday evening, causing minor injuries to the BSF officer, his wife and two jawans. The officer's vehicle was damaged in the explosion.

Nine people were wounded, two of them seriously, when militants detonated an improvised explosive device fitted in a bicycle near Nanak Bhavan in old Baramulla on Sunday. Two private vehicles and a scooter were also damaged in the explosion, according to an official source.

Twenty minutes before the explosion, militants carried out a similar attack at Palhallan-Pattan in Baramulla district while an army convoy was on its way to Srinagar from Kupwara. An army vehicle was damaged in the blast and four soldiers were injured, he said.

A fourth standard student was killed when an explosive device went off in his hand at Ochlipora-Kunzar in Baramulla district on Saturday evening. The boy had found a ball like object which exploded when he fiddled with it, he said.

A mine blast took place at village Chrunda in Baramulla on Saturday evening, seriously wounding a civilian.

In Anantnag district, an unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces at Duroo-Gurinar and police recovered a man's body from village Khaiyar-Aishmuqam on Sunday.

Militants fired at police guards deployed for protection of the minority community at Nowgam in Anantnag district on Saturday night. The police guards retaliated, repulsing the militant attack. None was hurt in the shootout.

Army personnel, who were involved in an encounter with Tehreek-ul-Jehadi Islami militants in Mangana village of Poonch district in Jammu region on Saturday, shot dead five of them by evening, official sources said.

A search was on in the area to track down the remaining two militants who had fled the encounter scene.

In another incident, police shot dead a Lashkar-e-Tayiba militant, Abu Harara, at Ramkote of Kathua district of Jammu region during the period. Some arms, ammunition and several incriminating documents were recovered from the slain militant, the sources said.
