E-Mail this report to a friend

Day curfew was on Sunday lifted in the border town of Rajouri in Jammu division which witnessed communal clashes between students and subsequent firing by the police, which left three injured on Saturday, even as the state government ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incidents, official reports in Jammu said.

The curfew, imposed on Saturday evening, was lifted from 1000 hours to 1900 hours (IST) as no untoward incident was reported since its imposition, the reports said. However, police and para-military troops had been asked to remain in sensitive areas of the town, they said.

Deputy Commissioner A R Khan said that a magisterial inquiry had been ordered into the incidents.

Two groups of students of the degree college clashed over the college election issue. They later clashed outside the college in which one student was injured. Police, posted outside the college, resorted to a lathi-charge and bust teargas shells to control the situation.

However, when the situation went out of control, they resorted to firing injuring three students.
