'Aren't there many politicians in India who are not different from Veerappan?'
Date:
Thu, 24 Aug 2000, 16:56:34EST -0400 That was a highly biased article, which painted a negative image of Veerappan. Hopefully the reporter will learn a little more about human rights before penning another such article. Kalayini Kandiah

Thu, 24 Aug 2000, 13:44:18EST I left Bangalore for London nearly three years ago. I am surprised to know that Veerappan has well-wishers even in a far off country like London. Yes, Veerappan is a killer, a smuggler, a kidnapper etc. But then aren't there many politicians in India who are not in any way different from Veerappan? Since it is a well-known actor who has been abducted by the forest brigand, there is such a hue and cry in the media. But when Veerappan kidnapped the young forest guards, nobody even tried to secure their release. So much so that Veerappan set them free without much ado. Who is Rajakumar? He has made enough money for himself and has enjoyed all sorts of comforts. In the films he acted, he has often played the role of a super hero ready to die for his nation. But in real life, he is pleading with two state governments to sanction Veerappan's demands (whatever they may be) and to get him released! I really blame the people of Karnataka for much of the tamasha that is going on. I cannot understand why they had to stop work and wait for the actor to be released. To me, their behaviour makes no sense. Sampath Kumar

Thu, 24 Aug 2000, 15:00:38EST +0530 Under no circumstances should the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu accept Veerappan's demands. They should, instead, send Black Cat commandos to track him down and finish him off. In my opinion, the issue is political and Gopal is Veerappan's aide. Gopal too should be booked by the law.

Wed, 23 Aug 2000, 11:16:34EST -0700 It is a shame on the part of the state governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to have conceded to Veerappan's demands. I fail to understand why the law is not the same for everyone in the country. Why should the government want to accede to all the demands of Veerappan to secure the release of Rajakumar? What has Rajakumar done for the country to merit this kind of treatment? It is sad that people do not have self-respect and are willing to sacrifice their lives for Rajakumar's release. Time and again politicians and the film world have proven that they are burdens to the country. The government should stop sending emissaries to negotiate with Veerappan and instead deal with the criminal with a firm hand. Do we not have any political will at all? Ram

Wed, 23 Aug 2000, 11:48:14EST I would like to express my support to Mr Kareem in his fight against the release of the terrorists. If I can do something in this regard, please let me know. I hope this message reaches Mr Kareem.

Thu, 17 Aug 2000, 23:50:01EST -0500 This is just a replay of the Rubaiya Sayeed case and will have the same consequences too. All one has to do in India now to get what one wants, is to kidnap someone important. Rudranath Talukdar

Fri, 18 Aug 2000, 11:04:48EST +1000 The government should not give in to his demands. Before doing so they should think of the innocent victims who have been mercilessly killed by Veerappan. When the government could track down Sivarasan of the LTTE, why can't they nab Veerappan? Vijaya Shankar

Thu, 17 Aug 2000, 14:37:42EST -0700 Who is running the country? Veerappan or the Goverment of India? If the government cannot guarantee the safety of every citizen in India, then a person visiting a remote farmhouse does so at his or her own risk. So it must be with Dr Rajakumar and his fellow hostages. If we negotiate with a criminal under these circumstances, the law and order situation in India will only move from bad to worse. Thu, 17 Aug 2000, 12:12:15EST -0400 That was a good article showing the strength of the woman who has gone through the agony of loosing her husband. Here, we are seeing politicians trying to make a deal with a thug when he should be brought to justice and put away for life. Shame on the goverments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu!

Thu, 17 Aug 2000, 08:52:30EST -0500 It is ridiculous to imagine that an eight-year old girl, however precocious, can write a letter of such complexity and maturity. The concoction may be warranted but I fail to see how Veerappan would be duped by this. Sridhar Sunderam

Sat, 11 Aug 2000, 07:54:00EST -0700 It was inspiring to learn that Rajakumar walks so much everyday and is such a humble person. Manjula G
