JK panchayat polls in four phases

Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in four phases beginning January 5, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan said Friday.

The first notification for the elections, to be held on non-party basis, will be issued in November. Elections are required to be held within 45 days from the date of notification.

Choudhary said the whole exercise, involving about 2,600 panchayats will be completed in a month's time, barring a few pockets where, if necessary, the elections will be held in April.

Replying to questions, Choudhary said the government does not anticipate any major problems, but said the election in phases was necessitated by the law and order situation in the state.
