28 militants, 4 securitymen
among 34 killed in J&K

In stepped-up anti-militant operations, 28 ultras were shot dead while four security personnel were killed and six injured in Jammu and Kashmir since Sunday, an official spokesman said in Srinagar on Monday.

In north Kashmir, a major tragedy was averted on Monday with the timely detection of an improvised explosive device planted by militants on the national highway at Hanjiveera-Pattan in Baramulla district.

Six militants laid down their arms and several militants' hideouts were smashed in the state, the spokesman said.

Three army personnel - Naib Subedar Noor Din and sepoys Sanjay Kumar and Phool Singh - were killed in an ambush at Dadwali village in Poonch district on Sunday when militants opened fire on a patrol party.

The spokesman said 13 militants were killed in three separate encounters during search operations at Thinmarg, Dewal Duga and Shagroo in Udhampur district in Jammu region on Sunday and Monday.

Six more foreign mercenaries were shot dead by security forces in a day-long encounter at Cherwoor village of Anantnag district on Monday, he said.

Security forces killed two militants, belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit, who were trying to cross over to the Kashmir valley via Nunkhel pass on Pir Panjal ranges last night, official sources said.

They said another militant was killed in an encounter at Sadyal village of Rajouri district.

The spokesman said a counter-insurgent was killed and two persons were abducted by militants in Anantnag district in separate attacks on Sunday.

Six militants belonging to different militant outfits surrendered, with their arms and ammunition, before the security forces and police at Surankote in Poonch district on Sunday, the spokesman said.

Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir police assisted by security forces killed an unidentified militant at Magnipora village in Baramulla on Monday, he said.

In a joint operation, SOG, Pulwama and the Border Security Force gunned down two local militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen -- Abdul Rashid Dar and Mohammad Maqbool Ganai -- in Pulwama district.

Two other intruders were shot dead by BSF jawans near Naga post in Samba sector, he said.

A soldier was killed when an army vehicle ran over a landmine planted by militants at Batingoo on Sopore-Bandipora road early on Monday, a police spokesman said.

He said a security jawan was seriously injured when militants blew up a security vehicle with a land-mine on the Doda-Bhaderwah road in Doda district on Monday.

The spokesman said a woman was killed and her husband seriously injured when unidentified militants opened fire on their house at Kalaroos in Kupwara district on Sunday night.

Police arrested a Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Mohammad Ashraf Khan from Kalamdanpora in downtown Srinagar.
