Five securitymen among eight killed in J&K

Five security personnel and two militants were among eight people killed while a cache of arms and ammunition was seized in overnight operations in Jammu and Kashmir, a government spokesman said on Saturday.

Six securitymen were also wounded in the period, during which a hardcore militant involved in the killing of a National Conference leader in July this year escaped in a sensational jail break from the high security Kishtwar jail.

The militant who escaped was involved in a number of militancy-related incidents in Doda district in the past.

Two army jawans were killed and three wounded when militants ambushed their patrol at Sumblar in Bandipora area of Baramulla district on Friday evening.

A Border Security Force sub-inspector, who was injured in a militant attack at Bohrikadal in downtown Srinagar early on Saturday, succumbed to injuries.

Militants also abducted and killed a head constable of J&K police, Mohammad Altaf, at Batveer-Bijbehara in Anantnag district on Saturday, the spokesman said.

A Special Police Officer, Chandi Singh, was killed in a militant ambush on a police party at Arnas in Udhampur district on Friday evening.

Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at border out-post at Naushera sector of Rajouri, while militants killed civilian Abdul Aziz at Mandi in Poonch district on Friday.

Three BSF jawans were injured when militants attacked their picket with a grenade at Gojwara locality in interior Srinagar on Friday night.

Militants also hurled a grenade on a security picket at Chattipadshai in Baramulla district, but no harm was caused.

An army vehicle was damaged when militants exploded a landmine at Nihalpora in Pattan area of Baramulla district on Saturday. However, no one was hurt in the explosion, the spokesman said.

He said police, assisted by security forces, recovered eight AK assault rifles, two rocket launchers, a grenade launcher, 95 grenades, a wireless set and eight remote control devices during searches at Pattan in Baramulla and Noorgan forest in Rajouri district on Friday.

Two persons were arrested in connection with the seizure in Baramulla.

Militants also shot dead one civilian Poonch district on October 12.
