TN Congress not against leading third front

Four days after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagan supremo J Jayalalitha was convicted in the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation case, the Congress on Friday sought to shed its image of playing second fiddle to its main ally by declaring that it was not averse to leading a third front in the state. Assembly elections are to be held in the state next year.

Senior leader and the party's state electoral officer K Sankaranarayan, when asked at a press conference in Madras whether the Congress was prepared to lead a third front in the state, said, "Why not?"

Echoing the Tamil Maanila Congress' stand on power-sharing, Sankaranarayan said his party would strive to capture power in alliance with 'like-minded' parties, but refused to identify them.

"No party in the state is in a position to form a government on its own,' he noted, virtually discounting the AIADMK's assertion that it would assume power on its own.

He said his party also wanted to share power when the next government is formed in coming April, adding that corruption would continue to be an issue in the forthcoming polls though AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha had been convicted in the Tansi land deal case by a special court.

Sankaranarayan was visibly not at ease while answering a volley of questions like how his party could accept the leadership of a party whose chief had been convicted in a corruption case.

Expressing regret on Jayalalitha's conviction in the Tansi land deal case, he asserted that the trial court verdict was not final as she had avenues for appeal.

In contrast to the earlier refrain of Congress leaders that the party's alliance with the AIADMK would continue, Sankaranarayan kept the issue in the background and opened the possibility of the party leading a third front.
