Osama no terrorist, Kashmir not integral part of India: SIMI

The Students Islamic Movement of India does not consider Osama bin Laden a 'terrorist' nor Kashmir an 'integral part of India'.

SIMI secretary general Safdar Nagauri expressed these views while addressing a press conference in Lucknow on Wednesday. He alleged that declaring bin Laden an international terrorist was an 'evil design of America'.

In reply to a question, he admitted that cassettes of bin Laden's speeches were distributed during a SIMI meeting in Kanpur a few months ago. "We never considered him a terrorist and will defend him on this count," he added.

He also said Kashmir was a vexed problem. "Three parts of Kashmir are in the possession of India, Pakistan and China and the residents of these places should be asked to give their consent who they want to remain with."

Asked about the recent spate of accusations of anti-national activities against SIMI activists, he said these were fabricated. Some SIMI activists had recently been arrested in connection with bomb explosions in Uttar Pradesh on the eve of Independence Day.

But Nagauri claimed that as many as 50 SIMI activists had been arrested on false charges.

In reply to a question about an Intelligence Bureau officer being manhandled in the Aligarh Muslim University premises, Nagauri denied any inhuman act against the officer. He claimed the students arrested in this regard were innocent.
