Six militants killed; tragedy averted in J&K

Six militants, some of them foreigners, were killed and five arrested in Jammu and Kashmir, while two Central Reserve Police Force personnel and as many girls were injured in a grenade assault at Regal Chowk in Srinagar on Wednesday afternoon.

Official sources said militants hurled the grenade towards a CRPF patrol party. It exploded on the roadside.

An official spokesman said Javed Ahmad Paul was killed when an Improvised Explosive Device he was carrying went off at Awantipora in Pulwama district on Wednesday.

Security forces personnel killed two militants during a search at village Gurwat Kalan in the central Kashmir district of Badgam on Wednesday.

A militant was shot dead by security forces personnel at Ahlan Gadole Kokernag in south Kashmir on Tuesday evening. An AK-46 rifle, two magazines and 20 rounds were recovered from the slain militant.

Security forces personnel eliminated two militants, including a foreigner, during an encounter at Pulwama in south Kashmir late on Tuesday night. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from the deceased.

Border Security Force personnel arrested five militants at Kupwara on Tuesday evening and recovered arms and ammunition from them.

Meanwhile, an Indo-Tibetan Border Police road-repair party averted a major tragedy on Wednesday when it detected and defused a 30-kg explosive device planted under a culvert on the main road at Rein-Thaman Kote area, 5 km from Kokernag in south Kashmir.

Another IED detonated on Wednesday on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, near Banihal.

Security forces personnel detected yet another IED on the national highway in the Chambal area. Efforts to defuse the device failed and it exploded around noon. No loss was reported from the spot.

Traffic on the highway remained blocked for several hours during the task of defusing the IED.

Security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a militant hideout in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district on Wednesday. The haul included 21 Chinese rockets of three types, 35 sealed boxes of AK ammunition containing 25,200 rounds, 23 rocket boosters and 60 kilograms of explosives.

On specific information, troops launched a search operation in Achhad area of the district on October 9 and after 36 hours of extensive search, they located the hideout where militants had stored huge quantity of weaponry.

Today's haul, the third major recovery in the area in the last two months, has dealt a blow to the terrorists and their masters across the Line of Control, an army spokesman said.
