Internecine clashes in PoK leave three militants dead

The differences in the ranks of militants operating in Jammu and Kashmir came to the fore when three prominent activists of the Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in internecine clashes in Kotli in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir a few days back.

An armed contingent of Jamaat-e-islami cadres, led by its PoK chief Abdul Rashid Turabi, forcible occupied the headquarters as well as several camps of the rival Hizbul Mujahideen's Pir Panjal regiment in Kotli and Sahansa areas. Later, he appointed one Shamsher Khan as chief of the regiment, according to intercepted messages of militants.

Head of the PPR Masood Sarfraz retaliated by surrounding the place where Turabi along with his followers was present. In the exchange of fire that followed, two militants and one Jamaat functionary were killed. Six others were injured.

Masood Sarfraz has dissociated himself from the Jamaat. Kotli was tense after the clashes and people did not venture out into the streets.

Later, Masood told a press conference that Jamaat supremo Qazi Hussain Ahmed had hobnobbed with the Americans during his recent tour to the United States of America. The Central Intelligence Agency had given Qazi some funds through the Islamic Circle of North America to establish American influence in Kashmir.

The Hizb, led by Abdul Majid Dar, had offered a ceasefire in July and held talks with the representatives of the central government. However, the outfit's insistence on tripartite talks involving Pakistan led to the breakdown of the ceasefire.
