Naipaul, Rushdie among favourites to win Nobel

V S Naipaul and Salman Rushdie are among the favourites to win the coveted Nobel Prize for literature.

Though the literature award is always the first to be announced, this time it will be the medicine category that will see the first winner. The last award will be the Nobel for peace.

Last week the Swedish Nobel academy failed to decide on the winner in the literature category, pushing medicine into the top slot.

The winners of the awards for physics and chemistry will be announced on Tuesday and for economics on Wednesday in Stockholm.

The Nobel prizes were instituted by Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite.

This year, US President Bill Clinton and former US president Jimmy Carter are the front-runners for the peace award. Former US senator George Mitchell is another American contender in the category for his efforts to resolve the conflict in Northern Ireland.
