'Does the NDA government need Ms Banerjee?'

Date: Thu, 05 Oct 2000, 14:34:42EST -0400
Subject: Mamata adamant on rollback, PM hopeful

I am surprised that the NDA government is tolerating the behavior of Ms Banerjee who, of late, has been acting like an unruly child. One sure way to stop this is to show her the door. The other option is letting her go on her own (like a sulking child).

The question is, does the NDA government need Ms Banerjee? In the short run, maybe yes, but in the long run, no, they don't need her. So why not kick her out?

I am also surprised at how Mr Fernandes of all the people, runs to her every time she sulks.

Has Mamata Banerjee ever done anything constructive in her life? We Indians would like the country to be progressive and become a force to reckon with. But because of the behaviour of politicians like Mamata Banerjee, we look like a country of idiots. We can certainly do without such politicians ruling us.

I think this report was written before the announcement made by the BJP spokesperson that petroleum prices will not be rolled back and the issue will be reviewed only after the PM returns after his knee surgery. So the PM conceding to Mamta's every demand doesn't arise.

Secondly, is it necessary for every politician to play cheap politics of the kind that Mamta is playing? If Naveen can get his job done by consultation, why should he go in for confrontation?

I strongly feel that this was a cheap political drama performed by Banerjee with an eye on the assembly election. She is known to resort to such acts. The price rise in petroleum products is essential because the price of crude oil in the international market has gone up considerably. I also feel that the PM should have the guts to tell his allies that economics should not be politicised.

Excellent report, keep it up! And to hell with Mamata and her likes!

The BJP government is only hoping that the world oil prices will come down by the end of this month so that they can reduce the prices.

This whole drama is unnecessary.

I wonder when India will be enlightened with good leaders. The hike in petroleum prices has been decided after various facts and statistics are considered. Ministers like Mamata should learn of the reasons behind the increase. And she should learn how to join hands with the PM in strenghtening India's economy rather than threatening to withdraw support. I strongly believe that India can become a strong economic power if politicians like Banerjee are not voted to power.

Mamata should know that by behaving like Jayalalitha, she is the one who stands to lose. If Mamata wants to win the assembly elections in West Bengal, supporting the Vajpayee government is her best bet.

The Western press had once asked Rajiv Gandhi if he would devalue the Indian rupee to save the foreign exchange shortage. Rajiv replied, "India is not a Latin American country. If we roll back our plans, we will make enough money in a few months to cover the shortage." Devaluation and oil price hike is the only weapon known to western countries to buy cheap goods from India.
