Jaya's tour, party meet cancelled

In the first political consequence of the special court verdict sentencing AIADMK chief Jayalalitha to a three-year prison term in the TANSI land deal case, the party's general council meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, has been indefinitely postponed.

Jayalalitha said in a brief announcement in Madras that the meeting was being postponed for 'unavoidable reasons'. A fresh date would be announced later, she said.

The AIADMK headquarters issued another press release announcing that Jayalalitha's planned tour of the southern districts of Tamil Nadu from October 15 was also being postponed.

The party alleged that its functionaries were arrested on Sunday night in various parts of the state, long before the judgment was delivered, in the name of preventing measures.

The arrests were continuing, rendering it impossible for partymen at district, panchayat union and town levels to make arrangements for Jayalalitha's various programmes on her tour, the release said. It also alleged that partymen were being held under non-bailable sections.
