Major tragedy averted in Poonch; militant killed in Rajouri district

A major tragedy was averted when troops of the anti-insurgency Romeo Force detected a powerful Improvised Explosive Device planted by suspected militants at Fatehpur village near Surrankote in Poonch district, a defence ministry spokesman said on Friday.

A bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot and defused the IED containing approximately five kilograms of deadly RDX and planted in a pressure cooker. The incident occurred on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, a hardcore militant of the Lashkar-e-tayiba militant outfit was killed by troops during a search operation, on Thursday evening, the spokesman informed.

He said troops of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry were conducting a search at Dhakikot-Chalwalkui village in Parankot area of Rajouri district when militants began firing upon them.

The troops returned fire and, in the ensuing encounter, Abu Haneefa, a hardcore militant was killed on the spot. An AK 47 rifle with four magazines, four hand grenades, one wireless set in a damaged condition and 87 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the encounter site, the spokesman said.
