Cong defeats BJP to retain Lakhnadon seat

The ruling Congress party in Madhya Pradesh has retained the Lakhnadon assembly seat in Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh defeating arch rival Bharatiya Janata Party by a margin of over 24,000 votes.

Congress candidate Beni Parte polled 47,538 votes against 22,546 polled by Union Minister of State for Tribal Welfare Phaggan Singh Kulaste's younger brother Ram Pyare Kulaste of the BJP in the by-poll held on September 29.

The by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting Congress member Randhir Singh. Congress has been winning from the constituency since 1957.

Parte had contested the November 1998 assembly elections from Lakhnadon as a rebel. He stood third bagging around 14,000 votes.

This time too, the Congress had to contend with a rebel, Subodh Netam, brother of Madhya Pradesh's Minister for Tribal Welfare Urmila Singh, who had been president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress for some time in the nineties.

Reacting to the victory, state Planning Minister Hazarilal Raghuvanshi who was the Congress in-charge for the Lakhnadon by-election said that the party's victory was a severe blow to the BJP.

He said that the Congress win had come despite predictions that the party would not fare well because of the presence of the rebel candidate.
