I am not an ISI agent: J K Jain

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

J K Jain, a former Bharatiya Janata Party member of Parliament and owner of Jain TV, Wednesday requested Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to help him out of a piquant situation wherein he faces the allegation of being a Pakistani agent and his television station, an ISI outfit.

Jain said he had written three letters to the prime minister apprising him of the mental anguish caused to him by the allegations, but had received no reply.

"This is a conspiracy to destroy my image and discredit Jain TV," Jain said while speaking to mediapersons.

Jain said he learnt from some of the prime minister's colleagues that a Research and Analysis Wing report had branded him a Pakistani agent. He said the RAW report was forwarded by the ministry of home affairs for appropriate action to the ministry of information and broadcasting.

"This happened without the knowledge or approval of the home minister. The consequential effect of this report is that I, as an individual, and my TV station are being treated like enemies of the nation by your government," Jain emphasised in his first letter to the PM.

Pointing out that his induction into the BJP was at the instance of the prime minister himself, Jain wrote in his letter: "The severe pain that has been caused to me and my family by such absurdities and utter falsehoods may not evoke any sympathy and support for me from my leaders and party because the prevailing political culture centres around power and not human values."

Jain said he suspects that the vilification campaign against him was being carried out at the behest of a leading industrial house.

When contacted, BJP spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said he had no knowledge about any such RAW report. "The controversy pertaining to Jain TV's proprietor has not reached us yet," he told rediff.com.

Top sources in the ministry of home affairs, however, said whatever the case against Jain, he was not likely to be chargesheeted.
