Delhi Cong MLA beaten up
for anti-Ambedkar remarks

In an unprecedented event exposing gaping holes in the security arrangements in the Delhi Assembly complex, Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly Roop Chand was beaten up by some outsiders on Tuesday for his anti-Ambedkar remarks made in the House last week.

Security personnel confirmed that some eight to ten people accosted Roop Chand, MLA from the Nand Nagri (scheduled caste) constituency, in the assembly compound around 1300 hours (IST).

After a heated verbal exchange, the MLA was roughed up and black paint smeared on his face. A garland of shoes was also hung around his neck, eye witnesses said.

The entire episode was over in a matter of a few minutes and the attackers, said to be members of a group called Samata Sena, left the assembly compound shouting slogans against the MLA.

Roop Chand, during a discussion on a proposal to install a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in the assembly complex, had opposed the idea and said that he was not the real architect of the Constitution. While eight committees worked to frame the Constitution, the 'lime light had been grabbed by Ambedkar', he had said.
