Army battles ultras at Kupwara, Badgam

Police said army troops laid siege around the Potshshi forest in Kupwara district and Banderpora in Badgam district early Saturday, sparking off clashes with militants.

Two foreign militants were killed and a civilian was wounded in an encounter that lasted for several hours at Chakla in Baramulla district of north Kashmir on Friday evening, police said.

Two local militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen were also killed by the police in an encounter at Khayam Chowk in interior Srinagar on Friday evening.

However, residents of the area alleged that Mudasir Ahmad and Tariq Ahmad Badroo were killed after their arrest by the police.

The security forces also killed Khurshid Ahmad Rather in an encounter at Kohistan colony in Safapora, Baramulla district, on Friday night, the police said.

Also Friday night, militants gunned down three people in attacks at Kramshore in Badgam district and Krankishivan in Baramulla district. The deceased were identified as special police officer Manzoor Ahmad, a counter-insurgent and former militant Ali Mohammad Ganai, police said.
