CBI court convicts Bhat for
kidnapping Soz's daughter

CBI investigations had revealed that Bhat and others had kidnapped Imtiaz on February 27, 1991, and demanded the release of five militants of the Jammu Kashmir Student Liberations Front (JKSLF). Few militants had to be released in exchange for the release of Imtiaz. She was released by the kidnappers on March 8, 1991.

Investigations into the case were entrusted to CBI on the request of the government of Jammu and Kashmir. The CBI filed a charge-sheet in the designated court on December 18, 1992 after completing investigations.

The designated court of Jammu has convicted Bhat for the offences punishable under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under Section 3 of the Terrorist And Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and sentenced him to undergo six years rigorous imprisonment, with a fine of Rs 13,000.

The CBI has investigated a number of sensitive cases of Jammu and Kashmir and they are under trial in court.
