Seven civilians and two security men were injured when militants tried to blow up a security picket at Pulwama district of south Kashmir On Wednesday, official sources said.

Militants hurled a grenade at a security picket near Pulwama police station, but it fell short of its target and exploded on the road, wounding seven pedestrians and two Border Security Force jawans, the sources said.

The injured were rushed to hospital.

Earlier, four security personnel, including a captain, and two militants were killed and six soldiers injured in an encounter in Pattan, Baramulla district, in north Kashmir.

Official sources said militants, hiding in a house at Aram-Mohalla, 28 km from Srinagar, opened fire and lobbed grenades on a search party.

The troops retaliated and in the ensuing exchange of fire, which lasted several hours, four security personnel, including a captain and two militants, were killed and six soldiers injured, they said.

A fire broke out in the house where the militants had taken shelter and engulfed another house.

The firing in the village adjacent to the highway forced suspension of traffic on the Srinagar-Baramulla road, the sources added.
