9 killed, NC leader's house attacked

Eight militants and a civilian were killed, while ultras blasted the residence of a ruling National Conference leader in the Kashmir valley since Wednesday evening.

An official spokesman said in Srinagar Thursday that four militants were killed in an encounter following an operation by security forces at Khandaypora in Kulgam of Anantnag district in south Kashmir Wednesday night.

Two houses were damaged in the encounter, which yielded arms and ammunition.

Militants also triggered an explosion in the house of NC block president Ghulam Mohammad Bhat at Handwara in Kupwara district early Thursday, he said, adding that the house and an adjoining house were damaged but no one was hurt.

In an encounter in Anantnag, a security forces ambush party killed a militant at Hanjipora in Dooru Thursday afternoon. An AK assault rifle was recovered, he said.

The forces shot dead three militants in an encounter at Watipora in Chadoora of Badgam district Wednesday.

Meanwhile, militants shot dead a person and threw his body in a canal at Driagam in Badgam district Thursday. The body was fished out by police Thursday.

He said, residents of Trehgam in Kupwara protested against a group of surrendered militants who abducted a youth and caused injuries to his three family members Wednesday night.

The surrendered militants, two of whom were identified as Mohammad Yaseen and Abdul Majid, forced entry into the house of Asadullah Mir at Trehgam and caused injuries to him, his wife Naseema and daughter Zareefa besides abducting his son Bashir Ahmad, the spokesman said.
