Garekhan elected to UN committee: PTI

Chinmaya R Garekhan has been elected member of a crucial United Nations committee that decides on the contentious issue of contribution by member states to the world body.

The UN veteran was elected to the committee by acclamation on Friday.

A former Indian ambassador to the UN, he served till last year as under-secretary general of the body and was the secretary general's representative to West Bank and Gaza.

The issue of contributions by member countries to UN's annual budget of $ one billion has turned out to be controversial following United States moves to cut its contribution from 25 per cent to 22 per cent. That will mean a reduction by $300 million to UN funds.

India contributes $350,000 annually to the world body.
