6 killed in attack on J&K army camp

Two heavily armed militants stormed an army camp at Magam Handwara in northern Kupwara district, killing four soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer.

In a subsequent heavy gun-battle, the militants, who were members of a suicide squad group of the frontline Lashkar-e-Tayaiba were also killed.

Police in Srinagar said Saturday night two squad members sneaked into the heavily guarded camp of the 24 Rashtriya Rifles at Magam in north Kashmir and sprayed bullets in all directions.

The militants also hurled grenades, killing four soldiers on the spot. Three armymen who received serious injuries in the attack were shifted to hospital.

Sources said the troops took positions in the camp and retaliated. The gun-battle continued for nearly two hours, during which the two squad members died.

Reinforcements were sent in by the authorities from adjoining areas. Troops later searched the camp premises and recovered two AK-47 rifles, a large quantity of explosives and ammunition.

Senior army and police officers visited the spot on Sunday morning.

The condition of the injured jawans was stated to be critical. The attack follows the Beeerwah incident, where militants, after storming a heavily guarded camp of the RR, had killed 13 jawans, including an army major. Several others were wounded.
