Maharashtra seeks UP's help to identify riot victims' kin

The Maharashtra government has sought the help of the Uttar Pradesh government to establish the identity of next of kin of the 1992-93 Bombay riot victims to extend financial assistance of Rs 200,000 to each family, pending for the last eight years.

Maharashtra principal secretary (home) Shatish Tripathy said in Gorakpur on Friday that immediately after the demolition of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in 1992, at least 1,000 thousand people lost their lives in Bombay due to the outbreak of riots and subsequent serial bomb blasts. The Maharashtra government had paid the next of kin of at least 800 families but still about 173 such families have to be paid.

Tripathy said the remaining families were mostly from UP, and the government had repeatedly requested the UP government to identify the families and recommend their names.

He said that besides financial assistance, minor children of the affected families could get Rs 450 per month from the National Foundation, New Delhi, to help them continue with their studies. He said unfortunately the UP government did not initiate any action and the money is lying unused.

Tripathy, who hails from Deoria district, tried to contact some such victims of Deoria, Varanasi and Fatehpur districts but said it was not possible to establish the contact with all. Only the state government can help, he said.
