Curfew lifted, probe ordered into Manipur firing

The Manipur government Saturday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the killing of 10 civilians in firing between militants and armymen here on Thursday even as the authorities lifted the indefinite curfew clamped in Imphal and Greater Imphal areas after the incident.

District magistrate of Imphal West district has been asked to probe the facts and circumstances which led to the explosion and subsequent firing between Assam Rifles personnel and militants at Malom-Tulihal area and submit a report within 20 days, official sources said.

"If the report was not adequate, the government might order a judicial enquiry", the sources said.

Meanwhile, the curfew clamped in Imphal East and West following the killings, was lifted at 4 pm following further improvement in the law and order situation, the sources said.
