Congress captures Leh council

The Congress Saturday secured two thirds majority in the Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council.

Of the 26 council seats, the Congress won 20 while the ruling National Conference could win only five. One went to an independent candidate, official sources said.

District NC president Tsering Norboo lost the election from two constituencies, he contested.

Among the Congress winners are outgoing chief executive councilor Thupstan Chheewang.

Last Saturday's election registered a more than 60 per cent voter turnout for the membership of the second term of the council set up during Governor's Rule in 1995. The council is responsible for local administration. The district magistrate is its ex-officio chairman.
