Girls try to rob bank in Poona with TV remote

Two young girls attempted to rob a State Bank of India branch in Poona on Thursday after threatening the manager with a television remote control.

The girls tried to fool the Ganeshkhind branch staff by saying that the remote control could trigger off an explosive but their bluff was soon called and the girls are now cooling their heels in custody.

The girls have been identified as 22-year-old Kanaklata Suresh Gogoi and 18-year-old Vandana Mukesh Sonkela, both hailing from Assam.

Kanaklata had completed her Masters of Arts from Poona University and Vandana is studying in the 12th standard in Assam, according to the police.

After the girls went to the bank on Thursday afternoon, Kanaklata threw a stone at the manager's cabin which, after breaking the glass pane, hit a bank client, who was sitting before the manager at that time.

The other girl drew out a remote control and threatened the manager that a bomb had been planted in the bank and the remote control could trigger an explosion.

The security staff at the bank, however, overpowered the girls and the duo were handed over to the police.

According to the police, Kanklata had requested Vandana to accompany her to Poona from Assam to help her with pack her luggage. However, the duo fell short of money to return to Assam and so they resorted to the bizarre hold-up.
