Four soldiers among 10 killed in J&K

Four security personnel and an equal number of militants were killed, three soldiers injured and ten houses gutted in a night-long gun battle at Wahthora in central Kashmir while elsewhere in the Valley one renegade militant was among two people killed since Thursday evening.

An official spokesman said Special Operations Group personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security officials, on a tip-off, on Thursday evening cordoned a village in Badgam district.

When the force reached a particular area of the village, they were fired upon from three houses by militants wielding automatics.

One soldier was killed instantly and a couple were injured. An injured soldier died enroute to the hospital.

Security forces personnel took positions and returned fire leading to an exchange that continued throughout Thursday night.

Bodies of four militants have been recovered from near the site of the encounter. The encounter was on when reports last came in on Friday afternoon.

Two more security personnel were killed and another injured on Friday morning in the same clash.

A UNI correspondent who visited the area on Friday afternoon witnessed the firing. Troops, in full combat attire, had sealed the area.

Reporters could see big flames after security forces fired a mortar towards one of the houses. The blaze spread to six adjoining houses.

A senior police official present there said some more militants were still concealed in a house.

In another incident, militants killed one Mohammad Yaqoob in his Noorkoti house on Friday morning.
