11 militants among 16 killed in J&K

Sixteen people, including eleven militants and three security personnel, were killed, five militants arrested and two others surrendered in Jammu and Kashmir in the last 24 hours.

An official spokesman said that security forces gunned down a militant in Baramulla district on Tuesday evening. He said one AK rifle and two magazines were recovered from the slain militant.

Villagers alleged security forces used mortars during the clash in which a house was damaged.

The spokesman said militants entered the house of one Ghulam Hassan Dar at Sunsum Achabal in south Kashmir and shot him dead late on Tuesday night while seven people were injured when a grenade exploded on the roadside after missing the security force picket at Buchpora on Tuesday evening.

He said security forces engaged militants in an encounter during a search operation at village Mangat late on Tuesday night during which two foreign mercenaries were killed. One jawan also lost his life, he said.

He said militants attacked a security force search party at Surankote on Tuesday evening with automatic weapons and grenades. Troops immediately returned the fire in which a militant and a civilian, Rafiq Ahmad, were killed.

Troops also gunned down a militant at Hak Pathri and recovered one AK rifle, three magazines, one grenade, a wireless set and a pouch on Tuesday evening while a self styled tehsil commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen Parviaz Ahmad was killed by forces at Sial Garhi.

He said a fierce encounter ensued during a search operation at Dhoke Kiran Gali forest on Tuesday evening between militants and security forces during which three foreign mercenaries were killed. Three AK rifles, 11 magazines, 40 rounds of ammunition, three wireless sets, three pouches and one compass were recovered near the place of encounter.

He said security forces arrested five militants in overnight operations while two others surrendered before the forces at Kupwara and another laid down arms at Chatroo before J&K police on Tuesday night.

A defence ministry spokesman said militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, including rocket launchers, attacked a road opening party at village Dhandak near Surankote in Poonch district on Tuesday evening.

The soldiers retaliated and in the ensuing encounter two soldiers were killed on the spot while five others were injured. The injured were immediately rushed to hospital.

He said that the militants managed to escape from the scene under the cover of darkness. A massive combing operation had been launched to nab the militants.

In another encounter, troops of the Rashtriya Rifles killed one militant in Poonch district. An AK 56 rifle with two magazines and 39 rounds, one pouch and a wireless set were recovered from the slain militant.

An official spokesman said that security forces killed a militant at village Gagrian in the district on Tuesday evening.
