Seven women Naxalites killed in encounter in Andhra Pradesh

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Seven women Naxalites belonging to the outlawed People's War Group were killed in an encounter in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday.

According to state police spokesman Shujath Ali, the encounter took place in Koyyur forest area in Karimnagar district, about 160 kilometers north-east of Hyderabad, on Wednesday afternoon.

The spokesman said that on a tip-off that Naxalites were holding a meeting in the area, a special police party from neighbouring Warangal district rushed to the spot.

The police party asked the Naxalites to surrender. However, the extremists opened fire. In the retaliatory firing, seven Naxalites -- all women-- were killed. The incident occurred around 12.40 pm. The police recovered several weapons from the slain Naxalites, the spokesman pointed out.

This is the first time that so many women Naxalites have been killed in a single encounter. However, their identity was yet to be established and further details on the incident were awaited, he added.
