The Rediff Interview/ Sabrina Dutta

'Right from childhood, Lara loved to pose for pictures'

We all knew she was going to win," says Sabrina Dutta, elder sister of Miss Universe Lara Dutta.

Lara's parents and her boyfriend, model and television personality Kelly Dorji, are with her in Cyprus where the Miss Universe pageant concluded this morning. Sabrina spoke to her sister a couple of hours after she was crowned. "She was very tired and was waiting to return to her hotel room and crash out."

Sabrina is now waiting for her parents to return and the family might throw a small party for close friends. M D Riti spoke to Sabrina to find out how it feels to be the sister of the universe's most beautiful woman.

What made you so sure that Lara would win?

Right from childhood, Lara loved to pose for pictures. You would never get a straight-faced Lara. She was always smiling into the camera or striking some funny pose. We always felt that when she grew up, she would get into modelling. My dad, however, wanted me to pursue journalism and my other sister (who lives in Gujarat) to study medicine. He always said Lara would become a pilot.

Well, things did not quite turnout the way he had planned. I do write some poetry and contribute articles to EM>Women's Era, but it's Cheryl who flies aircraft, and Lara...well, we sent her pictures to the Gladrags contest and she won. Rest, as they say, is history (laughs).

How did you watch the contest? On television like all of us?

We watched it on television. My parents are in Cyprus with her, of course...the coronation ball must be on right now, as you and I talk.

What did the family do when she won? How did you celebrate?

Well, I am home alone right now. When mom and dad get back to Bangalore, maybe we will throw a small party for our close friends and dine out together. Basically, we are very middle-class and cling fiercely to our privacy.

Did you speak with your parents after Lara won?

There's a time difference between India and Cyprus. When the telecast was just nearing its climax, Lara had actually already won. My Dad called up and said: 'go tell the whole world that my daughter has won the Miss Universe title.' I spoke to Lara two hours later, she was very tired just waiting to go back to her hotel and catch some sleep.

Did she tell you, before she left, what her plans were if she won?

She would like to study mass communication after her modelling career ends. Right now, she is studying for her BA in economics. She would have completed her degree long ago, but modelling has come in the way. She is very focused ...she knew the whole country had pinned its hopes on her. We really needed another Miss Universe, don't you agree? We have had just one so far and three Miss Worlds. Miss Worlds were outdoing the Miss Universes!

What do you think gave her that crucial edge over Miss Venezuela and Miss Spain?

Miss Spain had an enchanting face, but she couldn't speak English and that was her drawback. Miss Venezuela was beautiful, one of those real movie-type lovelies. I read all about her on the Net last night. I think she flunked the question-answer round. Lara has such good IQ and she is so articulate.

Did she rehearse questions and answers?

She did undergo training under Sabira Merchant. But Lara has always been quick on the uptake, never needed to think to come up with witty answers. In fact, we have often been at the receiving end of her wit. I don't think she rehearsed...she may have asked friends to ask her some snappy questions.

When Lara was a child, did she ever aspire to become a model or get into the business of beauty?

Yes, she did dream of it. She had this feelings that she would become a beauty queen - a Miss India, even a Miss Universe. I am glad her dream has came true.
