837 treated for cholera in Coimbatore

As many as 837 people have been treated for symptoms of cholera in the past four days at a primary health centre at Komaralingam in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.

Addressing mediapersons yesterday, district collector G Santhanam said of this number, 151 had been admitted to the government hospital in Udumalpet and Coimbatore medical college hospital. The first case was reported early on Friday. The condition of the in-patients was reported to be stable. Inoculation booths had been set up in eight places. More than 10,685 people had been vaccinated keeping in view of a temple festival at Kolumam this week.

Tests have revealed that the water of river Amaravati is contaminated. The joint director (epidemics) from Madras would be visiting affected areas today. About 12,000 water packets containing 250 ml each had been sent from the area. Except for the death of a 65-year-old woman, no other casualty was reported, Santhanam added.
