Yaseen Malik, 4 others released

E-Mail this report to a friend

In yet another gesture to create a conducive atmosphere for initiating dialogue with the Hurriyat, senior leader Yaseen Malik and four others were released from Tihar jail this evening.

Hurriyat spokesman Abdul Majid Bandey said Yaseen Malik and others were released at 1700 hrs today.

The Hurriyat leaders had been arrested in Srinagar in September-October 1999 under the Public Safety Act for opposing parliamentary elections. This is the third batch of Hurriyat leaders released by the government in the past few weeks to enable the government to start talks with them for bringing about peace in the trouble-torn Kashmir valley.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Syed Mir Qasim and several prominent civil rights activists are being involved by the government for acting as mediators with the Hurriyat.

Earlier in the day, Yaseen Malik was taken to the Patiala House courts (court no. ten of Sharda Aggarwal).

Malik and others were brought to Delhi from Jodhpur jail a week ago. He was also taken O Batra hospital for a medical examination.
