Militants attack police station in J&K

E-Mail this report to a friend

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

A group of heavily armed militants attacked the police station at Pattan in north Kashmir on the Srinagar-Baramullah highway late on Monday night. Police sources said the militants fired indiscriminately from automatic weapons on the police station. They also used rockets and hand grenades in the attack.

Sources said two Central Reserve Police Force jawans and a police constable were wounded in the attack. The police station building was also damaged. Security forces and the Special Operations Group rushed to the spot immediately and encircled the area.

In the exchange of fire, houses and shops in the main town caught fire. The local fire brigade had great difficulty in commencing fire-fighting operations. This is the third fire in Pattan town. Earlier, scores of houses and shops were destroyed in a blaze. Locals had then accused the security forces of starting the fire.
