Airports to get advanced radar systems

E-Mail this report to a friend

All airports will soon be equipped with secondary surveillance radar systems to ensure greater airport security, Union Civil Aviation Minister Sharad Yadav told the Lok Sabha today.

Answering questions, he said Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radars have already been installed in eight airports. These include Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Hyderabad, Thiruvanthapuram, Guwahati and Ahmedabad.

These radars are being installed in Nagpur, Varanasi, Behrampur (Orissa) and Mangalore airports at a cost of Rs 810 million and the project is expected to be completed by March 2001. There is a proposal to have the Port Blair airport equipped with this too, he added.

With these installations, all the air routes in India would come under surveillance and incidents like hijacking could be prevented.

Yadav said there was a proposal to upgrade the Amritsar airport to international status. This will soon be put before the Cabinet, he added.
