3 killed, 12 hurt in Konkan train mishap

Three persons were killed and 12 injured, five of them seriously, when a boulder fell on the running Kurla-Mangalore Matsyagandha Express train early Friday morning.

The Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd sources said the incident, which occurred between Sindhudurga and Kankavli stations on the Konkan railway in Maharashtra at about 0150 hours, entirely disrupted the traffic on the line. Preliminary reports indicate that the boulder smashed the roof of a compartment.

The deceased have been identified as Abdul Karim (30), Ram Narayan Shukla (30) and V R Chaudhury (30).

Konkan Railway Managing Director B Rajaram has left for the accident site along with a team of senior officers. The train had left Kurla station Thursday evening.

Efforts have been mounted to clear held-up traffic and some trains have been diverted, senior officials said.

The seriously injured are Abdul Kunhi (21), the driver of the train S L Chavan (21), Mohammad Ismail Khan (30), Aliar (33) and Rohini Ali (32).

Those with minor injuries are M Swami (45), Shankar Kapare (47), P Yashwant (35), Bije Patri (25), Abdul Hameed (14), Vijay (35) and Prabhakar Sawant.

The injured have been admitted to the Oros district hospital (phone: 02362-28900) and the Kankavli rural hospital (ph: 02367-32058).
