RSS takes 'sweet revenge' on Congress

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh seems to have taken 'sweet revenge' on the Congress in Gujarat. Literally. At least for one day.

In an interesting and sudden development in the state assembly, Speaker Dhirubhai Shah suspended for the day a Congress legislator, Khumansinh Chouhan, for offering pedas to the speaker apparently in celebration of the state government's withdrawal of its controversial circular about the RSS yesterday.

The incident took place when the house, sitting in two sessions today, reassembled after recess. Chouhan was seen moving towards the speaker's podium and offering him sweets.

This was objected to by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Mehta who demanded that the Congress member be named and asked to apologise for his behaviour.

However, Chouhan did not not oblige Mehta nor did he apologise. Finally, Mehta moved a resolution to suspend Chouhan for the day which was accepted by the house.

Meanwhile, during the recess, jubilant opposition members, led by the leader of the opposition Amarsinh Choudhary, celebrated the circular's withdrawal by distributing sweets and bursting crackers near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the assembly premises.
