CPI MP Geeta Mukherjee is dead

Geeta Mukherjee, one of the senior-most members of the Lok Sabha and of the Communist Party of India, died in New Delhi today of heart attack. She was 75.

Mukherjee and her husband, the late Vishwanath Mukherjee, a former minister, were among the founders of the communist movement in Bengal.

She had been in the forefront fighting for the cause of women and depressed people. She also played a leading role in mobilising public opinion for the Constitutional Amendment Bill, seeking to provide reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
