Mohanlal wins best actor award

Mohanlal has won the best actor award for his performance in Vanaprastham, while Samyukta Varma has bagged the best actress award for her role in Veendum Chila Veetukaryangal in the first annual Gulf Malayalam cine awards announced in Dubai Sunday.

More than 32,000 cine-goers selected two films and 11 film industry personalities for the awards, which will be given away at a function in Dubai on June 16.

Vanaprastham, based on an unusual love story of a kathakali artiste, was also adjudged best film and Prakash Moorthy was chosen best art director for the film.

The best director award went to Jayaraj for his film Karunam, which depicts the life of an aged couple left alone by their non-resident Indian children.

Jayachandran was selected best male singer for his number Nirom, while Chitra was adjudged best female singer for her number from Meghom, which got Gireesh Puthencherry the best lyricist award.

Vasnthiyum Laxmiyum Pinne Njanum got Mohan Sithare the best music director award. Ravi K Chandran was declared best cinematographer for his work in Kannazhuthi Pottum Thottu. Rajiv Kumar and Suresh Gopi were chosen for a special award for the film Jalamarmaram, while Varna Chirakukal was chosen for the special award in the children's film category.

Sukumari, a character actress known for her mother and grandmother roles in Malayalam movies, was selected for the all-rounder of the millennium award.

Film producer Balan K Nair, writer M T Vasudevan Nair and Sivaprasad, managing director of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation, will also be honoured at the prize distribution ceremony for their creative contribution to the Malayalam film industry, the organisers said.

Three of Kerala's sports personalities - I M Vijayan, T C Yohanam and P T Usha -- will also be given awards for their contribution to the sports world.
