Abdul Ghani Bhat is new Hurriyat chief

E-Mail this report to a friend

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Professor Abdul Ghani Bhat, chief of the pro-Pakistan Muslim Conference, has been elected as the new chairman of the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference.

The APHC is the umbrella organisation of several small political parties in the state which preach secession from the Indian Union in favour of accession to Pakistan or independence.

Bhat replaces Syed Ali Shah Geelani, firebrand leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami. Jeelani's two-year term as Hurriyat chairman ended in April this year.
